Skip Responsibilities

Skips and Club veterans should take responsibility for mentoring new members on how to learn the game, its rules and responsibilities. Here’s a top ten list for skips to follow to help their team members learn the game.

  1. Before Play: Shake hands with all players on your rink before and after the game. Introduce yourself to new players. Wish them Good Bowls. Toss a coin to determine who rolls the jack.

  2.  Managing the Bowls: Instruct the players to place their bowls to the back right and behind the rear edge of the mat. The Lead of the team who lost the last end should rake.

  3.  The Rule of Rink Possession: Only the team controlling the mat may communicate or be in the head.

  4.  Player Location: Move to the back of the head when the opponent player is on the mat. Everyone at the head should stand still and be quiet when a player is on the mat.

  5.  Team Communication: Pay attention to your players, directing and encouraging as the head is built. Teach and use hand signals as much as possible.

  6.  Measuring and Reporting the Score: Instruct your measurer to communicate the score only when both sides agree. The team conceding points should measure when possible. If the measure is close, the skips may be asked to measure before calling an umpire.

  7.  Recording the Score: Keep an accurate score for both teams and compare with the opponent for accuracy.

  8.  Match Communication: Communicate the ends played and score to your team as the match proceeds.

  9.  Weighted Shots: Advise players in the head if a weighted shot is about to be played so that they can protect themselves and adjacent rinks.

  10.  Match Completion: Verify scores are the same on both cards and turn into the league chair.
