Frequently Asked Questions
How many people play in a game?
Games are played between singles (1x1), doubles (2x2) or triples (3x3).
How long does a game last?
You should allow about two hours for a typical game.
Do women and men play against each other?
Absolutely. All our leagues and all but one of our tournaments include both women and men.
Do lawn bowlers have to wear white clothes?
Those days are long gone. Most bowlers wear shorts and comfortable shirts. During regional or national tournaments, teams will wear matching club shirts. The only requirement is that you wear flat smooth-soled shoes.
I’d just like to try lawn bowls before I join a club, can I do that?
Absolutely, in fact we encourage this. Thursday evenings from 7:00 - 9:00 PM are set aside for Community Bowling where instructors are there to teach the game. The first night is free. Any night after that a $10 fee is charged.
I don’t have any lawn bowls or equipment and don’t know where to get any?
The club will lend you a set of bowls free of charge. You are welcome to use them as long as you would like. If at some point you’d like to buy bowls or any other equipment, we can provide you with guidance as to cost and where you can buy them.
If I like lawn bowling can I do it by myself?
We provide open bowling practice sessions 3 or 4 times a week. We also allow members to practice on their own on the greens. You are welcome and encouraged to come to the greens to practice on your own or play in pick- up games.
Are there physical requirements that need to be met in order to participate?
The sport is enjoyed by people with a wide range of ages and physical abilities. In general, you need to have a decent sense of balance and the ability to bend over and roll an approximately three-pound bowl for a distance of up to 100 feet across a grass surface. A few practice rolls on the green will quickly allow you to evaluate whether this is a sport suitable for you.
Besides smooth-soled shoes, are there any other things I should bring with me when bowling?
During the summer you will be outdoors for a couple of hours, so a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are advisable. You may also want to bring a small towel (like a dishtowel), since moisture and grass clippings can cling to the bowls at certain times of day. While we provide water and cups during matches, some members bring a water bottle with their name on it.
What other amenities are available at the club facility?
The clubhouse has accessible and well-equipped restrooms and small lockers for rent. It has a kitchen sink, cupboards and a refrigerator stocked with water and other drinks that may be purchased for a nominal fee. There is plenty of outdoor seating and a covered picnic area. Parking spaces are available curbside on Reynolds St.
